UPDATE SUMMARY: Week of September 5, 2016

Broccoli
- Markon First Crop (MFC) Broccoli Crowns are sporadic due to larger size and branchy stems; Markon Best Available (MBA) will be substituted as necessary
- Quality is better in California than other regional areas
- Production is limited in Mexico due to inclement weather; prices are higher
Green Leaf
- MFC Premium Green Leaf is sporadic; MBA will be substituted as needed
- Raw product supplies are occasionally exhibiting mildew; Markon inspectors are monitoring quality very closely and will report any changes
- Stocks are sufficient; prices are low
Hurricane Hermine
- Initial damage reports are less severe than expected
- Growers have resumed harvests in multiple regions of Georgia and the Carolinas
- Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph hit the area; 3 to 5 inches of rain were recorded
- Crop conditions are being reported as normal despite sporadic bloom drop from high wind speeds; bloom drop will affect supplies in 4 to 6 weeks when cucumber, squash, and tomato plants would have been harvested
Hurricane Newton
- Up to 5 inches of rain fell in parts Northwestern Mexico
- The system has moved into Eastern Arizona, but did not affect the Yuma growing region
- The Mexican states of Sinaloa and Sonora, the main growing areas for cucumbers, hard squash, melons, and soft squash in October and November, received light-to-moderate impact from the storm
Iceberg Lettuce
- MFC Premium Iceberg Lettuce is available
- Supplies are sufficient for the upcoming weeks; the market is stable
- Regional yields remain adequate; West Coast demand is moderate
- Expect to see more growth cracking through next week due to inconsistent weather
Idaho Potatoes
- MFC Norkotah Potatoes are on the market
- MFC Burbank Potatoes will be available for shipment the first week of November
- Prices are easing and will remain low through harvesting or until growers close storage cellar doors in late October
New Crop White Russets
- Temperatures have been ideal during the White Russet growth phase; very good quality and high yields are forecast
- New crop White Russet harvesting will begin in mid- to late September
- White Russet potatoes will go through the sweat process before shipment
Onions
- Fresh-run MFC Onions from Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, and Washington are readily available
- Demand is strong in all growing areas, but Markon anticipates steady pricing for reds, yellows, and whites
- Harvesting for the storage crop has begun and will progress up over the next several weeks
- Onions possess a solid, globe-like shape, firm texture, and moderately spicy flavor
Romaine
- MFC Premium Romaine is sporadic; MBA will be substituted as needed
- More fringe burn (located on the outer and top portions of the head as well as inside the head) may result from hot weather
- Overall stocks should remain sufficient for the next few weeks
