UPDATE: BRUSSELS SPROUTS
August 6, 2021
The Brussels sprouts market remains elevated. Industry supplies are down due to inconsistent weather patterns affecting yields.
- Due to inconsistent weather, growth has slowed considerably in the Salinas Valley
- Currently, Salinas production is hand harvest only due to varying sprout sizing; machine-harvested varieties that grow uniformly were anticipated to begin next week but have been pushed back 10-14 days at minimum
- Domestic quality is good: sporadic burn and discoloration are present in some lots due to humid and warm weather; insect pressure is also reducing harvestable yields
- Expect elevated prices to continue for the next two to three weeks until Salinas Valley production is able to sufficiently meet current demand
