The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in conjunction with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections. Epidemiologic and traceback investigations indicate that alfalfa sprouts produced by Sprouts Extraordinare of Denver, Colorado, are the likely source of this outbreak.

What We Know:

  • So far, 30 people are infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella Reading or Salmonella Albany
    • Of the ill people, 24 were infected with Salmonella Reading, 1 was infected with Salmonella Albany, and 5 were infected with both Salmonella Reading and Salmonella Albany
    • 5 people have been hospitalized, no deaths have been reported
  • Illness onset dates range from May 21 to July 20, 2016
  • The illnesses have been reported across 9 states: Colorado (13), Kansas(8), Minnesota(1), Missouri(1), Nebraska(2), New York(1), Oregon(1), Texas(1), and Wyoming(2)
  • Traceback investigations identified five different restaurant locations where ill people ate alfalfa sprouts
  • Sprouts Extraordinare of Denver, CO, supplied sprouts to all five of these locations
    • On August 5, 2016, Sprouts Extraordinare initiated a recall of the affected products
    • Affected products include alfalfa sprouts in 5 LB boxes labeled “Living Alfalfa Sprouts” that were harvested July 4 to July 26, 2016

No Markon products are included in this investigation nor did Markon purchase any of the implicated items from Sprouts Extraordinare. Please remember to physically check your inventory to ensure none of the affected products are in your warehouse.
