FOOD SAFETY UPDATE: Increased Cyclospora Infections in Texas

August 05, 2016

Markon is closely monitoring a public health advisory from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) regarding a recent surge in reported illnesses due to the parasite Cyclospora. An investigation to determine a common source of the illnesses is under way, however at this time a specific product has not been identified and the investigation is ongoing.

What we know:

  • There have been 72 cases of Cyclospora infections reported in Texas in 2016
  • 55 of the 72 cases were reported in the month of July 2016
  • A specific product has not been identified and the investigation is ongoing
  • The Texas DSHS suspects these illnesses are foodborne and likely a fresh produce item but are looking at all possible exposures

Review the Texas Department of State Health Services notice and health advisory here.

Markon will continue to update members when more information becomes available.
