UPDATE SUMMARY: Week of July 4, 2016
July 07, 2016
Avocado supplies are extremely limited due to transitioning crops in Mexico, labor strikes, and grower-delayed harvests. Iceberg lettuce prices will continue to inch up next week as low weights and strong processor demand put upward pressure on markets.
Avocados
- Supplies will continue to decrease for the next two weeks
- Mexican growers are currently not harvesting fruit in an effort to generate higher prices; other reports indicate labor protests as well as growers unifying to delay harvests
- California stocks are available, but the season has peaked and supplies will diminish over the next several weeks
- The current market is elevated at historically high levels and expected to hold for the next few weeks until Mexican fruit begins crossing into the United States
Iceberg Lettuce
- Markon First Crop Premium Iceberg is sporadic due to inconsistent weights; Markon Best Available will be substituted as needed
- Low weights are strengthening processor demand and tightening supplies throughout the industry
- Quality problems such as growth cracking, insect pressure, small heads, and wind damage are reducing yields
- Expect limited stocks and rising markets into next week
