Washington pear growers will continue to pack storage crop fruit through June; supplies are expected to be depleted by the second week of July. Remaining stocks are dominated by large fruit (80- and 90-count sizes); smaller pears (120- and 135-count sizes) are extremely limited as a result. Prices for large sizes will remain steady, while the market for small sizes will climb. 

The new crop California Bartlett season will begin the week of July 6; early season supplies will be limited, but volume will increase by the week of July 11. California suppliers estimate that there will be approximately two million cartons available for shipment (comparable to the 2015 season). 

Washington

• Storage crop quality is high 
• U.S. No. 1 grade pear supplies are ample; fancy grade stocks are limited  

California

• Direct loading will be available in Lodi, Finley, and Exeter
• Product can also be consolidated at 4Earth Farms in Los Angeles

2016-2017 New Crop

• Northwest pear growers estimate approximately 18.7 million cartons will be available
• Up 2% from 2015 final harvest figures
• Down 7% from the five-year average
• Ideal spring weather (with no major weather events) has led to a full bloom
• Growers expect excellent quality and ample supplies for both the domestic and export markets
• The top three varieties produced are Bartlett, Bosc, and D’Anjou
• The estimated total crop breakdown is as follows:
• D’Anjou: 50%
• Bartlett: 23%
• Bosc: 17%
• The Bartlett season should begin the first week of August
• D’Anjou production will start in late August
