UPDATE SUMMARY: Week of June 6, 2016

 The domestic summer squash season is underway in Santa Maria, California; supplies are expected to remain ample for several weeks. Production in Georgia is at its peak, while harvesting in Northern Florida is winding down. Volume will ramp up in North Carolina over the next two weeks. Domestic Markon First Crop (MFC) Yellow and Zucchini Squashes are available from growing regions on both coasts. Effective June 7, Ready-Set-Serve (RSS) Cauliflower pricing decreased to normal levels.

 

Domestic MFC Squash

  • Ample supplies are available on the West Coast; East Coast stocks are steady, however heavy rainfall from Tropical Storm Colin delayed production in some areas
  • Prices are slightly higher than last week; demand is moderate
  • Domestic MFC Yellow and Zucchini Squashes are available from growing regions on both coasts
  • Harvesting will begin in Michigan by early July

Onions

  • While the recent transition out of Texas and Southern California tightened inventory, higher volume is expected the week of June 13
  • The market is steady
  • MFC Red and Yellow Onions will be shipped out of Central California and New Mexico through mid-August
  • Expect supply levels to increase in two weeks; prices will ease

RSS Cauliflower Floret Trigger Down

  • Warmer West Coast temperatures are aiding growth
  • Effective June 7, RSS Cauliflower Floret prices decreased to normal pricing
  • Quality is improving; yields are increasing
  • Expect markets to inch down even more through the week

Tomatoes

  • Mature green production will ramp up in South Carolina and California’s San Joaquin Valley over the next two weeks
  • Roma supplies will remain available from Central Mexico (into South Texas) through the summer
  • Prices are rising
  • Domestic quality is good; large-size fruit will dominate supplies
  • Expect elevated prices for the next two weeks
