UPDATE: Garlic
April 29, 2016
Both domestic and imported garlic supplies will remain extremely limited until the new crop California season starts in July. A combination of low yields and poor quality continue to reduce industry volume and extend the demand exceeds supply market.
- Domestic garlic is grown during the winter months, harvested during the summer (June through August), and put into controlled-atmosphere storage for year-round distribution
- Abnormal weather and late rains during summer harvests increased defects and lowered yields for this year’s storage crop
- California production will begin in June; expect increased stocks in July
- Prices will remain high over the next six to eight weeks
