Cloudy skies with occasional rain showers will move into the Salinas Valley on Friday, April 22. Even though showers are only expected on Friday, a cold front is also moving into the area, bringing temperatures down to the mid-to high 60s and gusty winds for most of next week. Higher prices for green leaf, iceberg, romaine, and strawberry items are expected into next week. Cooler weather and rain will slow growth and affect supplies and yields. 

• Light showers are expected to fall for most of the day tomorrow, April 22 totaling .10”-.25”  
• Delayed or cancelled harvesting schedules aren’t expected, but will depend on actual rainfall
• Markon has arranged with suppliers to pack ahead of the rain to fill orders 100%
• Increase of mildew pressure, premature pinking, reduced shelf life, reduced yields, and tighter supplies are expected on commodity green leaf, iceberg, romaine, and tender leaf items
• Increase of bleeding, bruising, decay, soft texture, and water damage are expected in strawberries
• Temperatures will cool to the mid-to high 60’s during the day, dropping at night to the mid-to high-40’s
• Plant growth will slow, resulting in fewer overall supplies
• Strong winds with gusts of 45+ mph are forecast, which will result in wind burn on leaf and lettuce items
• Salinas/Watsonville strawberry supplies will be limited through Mother’s Day due to the unseasonable weather
• Markon Inspectors will work with harvest foreman to keep cartons as dry as possible
