Cauliflower prices are rising this week, but should return to average levels within 10 to 14 days. Last week’s cool nighttime temperatures in Salinas and Santa Maria, as well as the harvesting transition from the desert to Salinas, have contributed to the shortage. The broccoli market is steady; supplies will remain sufficient for several weeks.

Broccoli

• Supplies are ample in Salinas, Santa Maria, and Mexico (loading in South Texas)
• Production is finished in the Arizona/California desert region
• Quality is very good: problems such as long branches and discoloration are improving
• Markon First Crop Broccoli Crowns are sporadic; Markon Best Available will be substituted as necessary due to branchy stems
  

Cauliflower

• Prices will rise into the high teens this week; supplies are limited 
• Desert production is ending
• Harvesting is not up to full speed in Salinas and Santa Maria yet, but will increase over the next two weeks
• Last week’s cool day and nighttime temperatures slowed growth
• This week’s higher temperatures as well as possible rain will help increase production in 10 to 14 days
• Large sizes (9-count heads) will be limited for the next two weeks, especially in Salinas
• Quality is very good, but as growers struggle to fill orders this week, some discoloration and smaller sizes may become apparent
