UPDATE: Domestic Melons

The domestic melon season is quickly approaching. Growers will harvest cantaloupes and honeydews in the Arizona/California desert region in May. Westside melons (grown on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley stretching from Bakersfield to Turlock, California) will hit the market in July.
Cantaloupe
- Markon First Crop (MFC) Cantaloupe Melons will be available the week of May 2
- New crop production will start in the California desert the week of May 2
- Seed varieties for domestic melons produce large fruit (9-count and larger sizes)
- Small sizes will become available by late May
- Typical pack-outs for domestic spring crops from the Arizona/California desert region will yield:
- 75% - 9-count and larger sizes
- 22% - 12-count melons
- 3% - 15-count and larger fruit
- The Westside season in California’s San Joaquin Valley will start the first week of July
- Typical pack-outs for domestic summer crops from the Westside include:
- 55% - 9-count and larger sizes
- 35% - 12-count melons
- 10% - 15-count and larger fruit
Honeydew
- MFC Honeydew Melons will be available week of May 9
- New crop harvesting will begin in the California desert the week of May 9
- Seed varieties for domestic melons produce large fruit (5-count and larger sizes)
- Typical pack-outs for domestic spring crops from the Arizona/California desert region will yield:
- 65% - 5-count and larger sizes
- 30% - 6-count melons
- 5% - 8-count and smaller fruit
- The Westside season in California’s San Joaquin Valley will begin in mid-July
- Typical pack-outs for domestic summer crops from the Westside include:
- 50% - 5-count and larger sizes
- 35% - 6-count melons
- 15% - 8-count and smaller fruit
