UPDATE: ONIONS

Texas onion growers continue to assess the damage from February’s freezing temperatures. Volume will be further affected as growers had already reduced the total number of acres planted for this season.
Texas
- Reports indicate approximately 5,000 acres were planted in the state of Texas this season; approximately 6,000 acres were planted last season
- It is estimated that the industry will lose 15% to 30% of their crop due to the mid-February freeze
- Expected elevated prices for Texas-grown onions through the entire season (March through May)
- Texas-grown Markon First Crop (MFC) Onions are expected to enter the market at the end of next week
Idaho, Oregon, Utah, and Washington
- MFC Onions are readily available
- Quality is excellent
Colorado
- The season will end next week
California
- Spring onions will start in the California desert region by late April
New Mexico
- Production will begin in early June
