UPDATE: Light Rain on the California Coast

February 18, 2016

Light rain swept over the coastal growing regions of California late Wednesday, February 17 and early Thursday, February 18. The Salinas Valley received between .25 and .50 inches with wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour. South Central Coast regions including Santa Maria and Oxnard experienced similar conditions with rain totals reaching .50 inch in some areas. Extended periods of warm weather over the past two weeks in Oxnard and Santa Maria have resulted in dryer soil, which will help absorb these showers. Production crews are on schedule to harvest; the industry will see little to no short-term impact from the rain.

Many strawberry growers harvested ahead in anticipation of the rain. Crews are culling fields for rain-damaged berries, but quality is expected to recover quickly with favorable weather in the forecast.
