FROM THE FIELDS: SPORADIC LETTUCE ICE IN THE DESERT REGION
Markon inspectors are observing sporadic lettuce ice in parts of the Arizona/California desert growing region as temperatures dipped as low as the mid 30s this morning. Minor harvesting delays can be expected as many growers scheduled start times up to two hours later than normal in anticipation of the ice.
More lettuce ice is forecast for Thursday, January 28, followed by another chance for rain on Friday, January 29. Supplies of desert row crop items remains adequate, but the recent cycle of rain, wind, and cold morning temperatures over the past week is expected to impact quality and shelf-life in many commodity and value-added items over the next two weeks or longer.
