UPDATE: GREEN LEAF, ICEBERG, AND ROMAINE
January 25, 2021
Despite recent storm events in the Arizona/California desert regions, lettuce prices remain low; supplies are ample.
-
Approximately two inches of rain fell last week in the Arizona/California desert region
- Growers harvested ahead to ensure supply availability as many harvests were canceled or postponed due to poor field conditions
- More rain is forecast for Friday, January 29; suppliers will continue to pack Markon First Crop Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine ahead this week to ensure orders are filled
-
Quality is very good, but may degrade in the coming weeks
- Sporadic growth crack, mildew pressure, and uneven texture are present in some lots
- Epidermal blistering and frost damage are also present in some fields, following multiple days of lettuce ice in December and January
- Recent rainfall may lead to elevated levels of mechanical damage and premature pinking in lettuce crops
- Expect prices to remain low over the next two to three weeks, pending any additional weather events
