UPDATE: ICEBERG
October 23, 2020
Iceberg prices are fairly steady but poised to rise as some Salinas Valley growers are finishing the Salinas Valley season earlier than anticipated.
-
Production is in full swing in the Huron, California region
- Quality is very good: heat-related defects such as growth crack, seeder, and sun scald are present in some lots
- Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus is minimal and easily avoided by harvesters as affected heads do not fully mature
-
Salinas Valley volume continues to be impacted by the soilborne diseases Sclerotinia and Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus
- Both are reducing harvestable heads at the field level
- Overall quality is good: puffy heads, seeder, and mildew pressure are present in some lots
- The Arizona/California desert regions will start production in a limited manner the week of November 2, then ramp up the week of November 9
- Expect tight supplies and active markets until early November
