UPDATE: ORANGE TRANSITION
October 13, 2020
The California Valencia season is coming to an end. Most growers will finish harvesting over the next week. Expect extremely limited supplies through next week, especially small sizes (113- and 138-count fruit). The first California Navels are expected to start shipping the week of October 19. Texas Early Oranges will be used to bridge the gap between California Valencias and Navels.
California Valencias
- 113- and 138-count supplies are extremely tight
- Size flexibility will be necessary for order coverage
- A handful of growers are expecting to have limited fruit through late October
- Valencia quality concerns include re-greening and softness due to above-normal temperatures (see attached photos)
California Navels
- New crop California Navel harvesting will start this week on October 15
- Navels will ship approximately five to seven days after production begins
- All Navels will be placed in gas rooms for a minimum of 72 to 96 hours to enhance their orange color
Texas-Grown Oranges
- Texas-grown orange oranges will bridge the gap until California Navel stocks start shipping; both Early and Navel varieties are available
- Texas fruit is available in combo and choice grades (see attached photos)
- Combo is a higher grade than choice, but falls below fancy-grade fruit
Mexican-Grown Oranges
- Limited supplies are available (into Texas)
- The Early variety is being shipped
Offshore Navels
- The offshore Navel season is nearly finished on both coasts
