High prices will persist next week; growers in Florida and Mexico are struggling with lower-than-normal temperatures and rain. Limited supplies are forecast through January.

Florida

• Cooler-than-normal temperatures and a daily chance of rain are forecast for the next two weeks in the growing regions of Homestead and Loxahatchee
• Cool weather is slowing plant growth; rain is affecting harvesting schedules
• Winds between 10 and 20 mph will cause scarring on bell peppers, cucumbers, eggplants, and squash; bloom drop will result in depleted stocks in approximately four to five weeks
• Quality is fair; expect shorter-than-normal product shelf-life
• Low volume is shifting demand to Mexico where supplies are also strained
• Expect prices to remain strong until weather improves

Mexico

• Prices will be high next week as cool nighttime temperatures and cloud cover continue to hinder growth
• Availability will slowly improve over the next two to three weeks as weather improves
• New production is anticipated in the main winter growing area of Culiacan, Mexico (loading in Nogales, Arizona and South Texas)
• Overall quality is good, but expect smaller size as growers must harvest early in order to meet demand
