FROM THE FIELDS: Continued Lettuce Ice in the Desert Growing Region

December 29, 2015

This morning, December 29, was the third consecutive morning that the Arizona and California desert growing regions received moderate-to-severe lettuce ice. Temperatures dropped into the upper 20’s and low 30’s, with the coldest temperatures dropping into the low 20’s in the Coachella, CA. Harvesting crews will be delayed up to 2-4 hours waiting for crops to thaw.

The freezing temperatures are expected through Saturday, January 2nd, with the coldest temperatures coming tomorrow, December 30th. Quality issues such as dehydration, epidermal blister, epidermal peel, and yellowing are being seen by Markon Inspectors with all lettuce, mix, and tender leaf items.

Markon Inspectors will be monitoring quality and reporting back with further updates.
