UPDATE SUMMARY: WEEK OF JUNE 8, 2020

Cauliflower

  • Recent hot weather has accelerated growth and created a supply gap
  • Crews are sorting for optimal size, slowing production
  • Demand is strong
  • Expect elevated markets through June

Cantaloupe

  • Domestic 6- and 9-count cantaloupes are available; supplies are adequate
    • 12-count melons are extremely limited; prices are elevated
    • 15- and 18-count cantaloupes are even tighter
  • Small sizes will remain scarce through June until production in California’s San Joaquin Valley begins July 6
  • Limited quantities of bin cantaloupes are available on the East Coast out of Florida and Georgia

Squash

  • The Mexican season (crossing into Nogales, Arizona) has ended
  • Georgia and North Carolina will receive rain through next week; supplies will tighten
  • The California season is well underway; demand will shift west, further pushing prices upward
  • Expect limited stocks for the rest of June

Strawberries
Salinas/Watsonville

  • Markon First Crop (MFC) Strawberries are available
  • Supplies are ample
  • Quality is good

Santa Maria

  • MFC Strawberries are available
  • Production is past peak levels
  • Stocks are diminishing
  • Quality is good

Tomatoes
Mexico

  • Baja, Central Mexico, Jalisco, and Michoacán vine-ripe volume has risen
  • Baja is the primary growing region for the Roma variety; supplies are increasing

East Coast

  • Northern Florida and South Carolina are the primary growing regions
  • Round and grape tomato yields have become more plentiful; prices are slightly lower

California

  • Light new crop harvesting has begun in northern growing regions
  • Supplies will ramp up over the next two weeks as more suppliers begin production next week
