FROM THE FIELDS: CALIFORNIA HEAT SPIKE
May 26, 2020
An extended high-pressure system is expected to bring record-breaking heat to California over the next several days with temperatures reaching over 100 degrees in inland areas. Suppliers are taking measures to mitigate as much crop damage as possible by harvesting early and keeping fields wet to help fields to recover overnight.
Heat-related defects are expected such as:
- Bottom rot
- Decay
- Fringe burn
- Internal burn
- Mildew and mildew damage
- Premature pinking, yellowing, and shortened shelf life in value-added items
- Rib blight
- Soft texture and small size (strawberries)
- Sunscald/sunburn
