UPDATE: Epidermal Blistering and Peeling in the Desert Growing Regions

December 21, 2015

The Arizona/California desert regions have experienced multiple weeks of below-average temperatures and freezing conditions in the majority of leafy green, lettuce, and other row crops. More cold weather is forecast through at least Tuesday, December 22, with light showers expected to begin Tuesday evening and possibly continue through Saturday, December 26. Continued harvesting/production delays are expected due to sporadic ice early this week, followed by muddy field conditions by mid-week.

Due to these multiple freezes, the growing community has communicated to Markon that they will not approve credit for fresh produce with freeze-related issues as stated in their below disclaimer:

All romaine and lettuce sales are FOB no grade contracts. This contract also excludes the implied warranty of merchantability and suitable shipping condition associated with field freeze such as, but not limited to, blistering, peeling, feathering, and discoloration.

These defects include, but are not limited to the following (see attached pictures):

  • Dehydration
  • Dull appearance/loss of sheen
  • Epidermal blistering and peeling
  • Wilted inner leaves (in leaf lettuce items)
  • Yellow discoloration (on leaf tips)

Please contact your Markon customer service representative for more information.
