FROM THE FIELDS: CALIFORNIA STRAWBERRIES

April 10, 2020

The Oxnard and Santa Maria, California growing regions received between .75”-1.50” of rainfall over the last 48 hours, saturating strawberry fields in the area. Harvesting crews are struggling in muddy conditions today, mostly stripping/culling damaged berries and packing limited volume. Some suppliers have canceled harvesting fresh market boxes and switched to packing in totes for processing/juicing.

Rain-related issues such as elevated bruising, decay, uneven color, and water damage are expected over the next five to seven days; volume will fall. Shelf-life potential will also be reduced.
