The Arizona/California desert growing season is coming to an end. Supplies are plentiful, but lettuce case weights are in the upper 30- to low 40-pound range due to growers disking more mature lots to avoid quality issues such as:

• Growth crack
• Elevated insect pressure
• Mildew damage
• Weak tip

California’s Huron season has been underway for two weeks; production will wind down by approximately April 15-17. Salinas Valley production will ramp up over the next two weeks.

• Quality is good, but weights are low
  • Huron iceberg weights are in the 40- to 45-pound range
  • Salinas lettuce weights are in the upper 30- to low 40-pound range
• Bottom rot and decay brought on by -rain is present in some lots
