FROM THE FIELDS: DESERT REGION QUALITY
March 26, 2020
The Arizona/California desert growing season is coming to an end.
-
Record rainfall and fluctuating temperatures have caused quality concerns in commodity and value-added lettuce items such as:
- Bottom Rot
- Decay
- Mildew and mildew damage
- Premature pinking in value-added items
- Rib blight
- Because of uncertain markets and weak demand, growers are minimizing costs by reducing or eliminating sprays/weeding measures that would suppress some of the current challenges
- Growers will disk fields and skip acreage to avoid mature or damaged product
- Limited volume is being harvested in California, but supplies will remain available in the desert region until early April
