FOOD SAFETY UPDATE: Outbreak of E. coli O103 Infections Linked to Clover Sprout

February 26, 2020

This update does not apply to any Markon First Crop, Ready-Set-Serve, or Markon Essentials products.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are investigating a multistate outbreak of E. coli O103 infections linked to clover sprouts. Epidemiologic evidence indicates that sprouts from Jimmy John’s restaurants are a likely source of this outbreak.

What we know:

  • Fourteen people infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli O103 have been reported from five states (Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Texas and Utah)
  • Illnesses started on dates ranging from January 6, 2020, to February 11, 2020
  • No hospitalizations have been reported, and no deaths have been reported
  • Jimmy John’s LLC reported that all of its restaurants stopped serving clover sprouts on February 24, 2020
  • Investigators are working to trace the source of the clover sprouts served at the Jimmy John’s restaurants where sick people ate, and to determine whether other restaurants or retailers received the same clover sprouts

This investigation is ongoing, and CDC will provide updates when more information is available.
