FROM THE FIELDS: Light Lettuce Ice In the Desert Region

November 28, 2015

Light lettuce ice is being reported in the Arizona/California desert growing regions in California this morning, as early morning temperatures dipped into the low-to mid-30s. Production delays, of up to 1-2 hours are being reported in some areas due to harvesting crews waiting for lettuce, tender leaf, and other crops to thaw completely.

No immediate quality issues are expected from today’s, November 28th, freezing temperatures. Lettuce ice is expected through Monday, November 30, which may cause freeze damage to occur resulting in epidermal blister to develop within the next five to seven days.

Current forecasts are calling for temperatures to return to near seasonal norms by Tuesday, December 1, warming a few more degrees through the end of next week. Markon Inspectors will be monitoring conditions and will update further as needed.
