FROM THE FIELDS: Rain in the Desert Region

December 24, 2019
The Arizona/California desert growing region began receiving rainfall Monday afternoon that continued sporadically through the night. More rain and below average temperatures expected into early afternoon today with total rainfall amounts ranging from .20”-.30” in the main growing region.

A second system will deliver upwards of .75”-1.00” on Thursday, December 26 and pave the way for widespread lettuce ice moving into the weekend. Both of these rain events will cause harvesting and loading delays due to muddy field conditions as well as potentially causing issues such as premature pinking and shortened shelf life in commodity and value-added salad items.
