FROM THE FIELDS: Lettuce Ice in South Salinas Valley

November 11, 2015

Early morning temperatures dipped into the low to mid-30s in the coldest parts of California’s South Salinas Valley, causing lettuce ice to form on some crops. As a result, harvesting crews will be delayed until approximately 8:30 a.m. (PST).

The light amount of ice will not cause any noticeable quality issues in the remaining lettuce and tender leaf crops in Salinas, but combined with the production delays brought on by rainstorms and muddy field conditions earlier this week will cause supplies to tighten even further.

Markon inspectors will continue to monitor field conditions, quality, and supply levels for the rest of the Salinas season and will update further as needed.
