UPDATE: Limited Colored Potato Supplies
October 17, 2019
Persistent rain, cold weather, and snow continue to curtail harvesting in the Michigan, North Dakota, and Wisconsin growing regions. Expect rising prices.
- Growers are contending with saturated fields and standing water, limiting access to fields for production
- Current conditions could affect the quality of long-term storage supplies
-
Of major concern is how the adverse weather will affect the Red River Valley growing region in Minnesota and North Dakota
- The Red River Valley is the largest producer of red potatoes in the U.S.
- Roughly 50% of the potato crop is still in the ground
- Demand will shift toward western growing regions, such as Idaho and Washington, which are also experiencing weather-related harvesting challenges
