UPDATE SUMMARY: WEEK OF OCTOBER 14, 2019

October 17, 2019

Salinas Valley Row Crops (Iceberg, Romaine, Broccoli, and Cauliflower)

  • Limited iceberg lettuce harvesting has begun in Huron, California
    • Salinas Valley stocks remain limited, which will keep markets elevated
    • Shipments between Salinas and Huron typically overlap, helping equalize available supplies, but this year nature has disrupted growing schedules
  • Volume will be extremely low through November due to damage caused by a rain/hail storm in the desert in late September

Melons

  • Markon First Crop Cantaloupes and Honeydews are now available from the Arizona/California desert region
    • The crop is expected to favor large sizes such as 9-count cantaloupes and 5-count honeydews
    • Desert supplies will ship through Thanksgiving, at which point the crop will transition 100% to Mexico and offshore regions for the winter
    • Mexican and offshore stocks are a few weeks away from entering the market

Tomatoes

  • Lower volume is expected for the next two to three weeks
    • California production is winding down
    • The Florida season is getting a slow start
  • Mexican supplies are starting to increase; growers are transitioning to fall plantings
  • East Coast prices will follow Mexican markets upward as demand increases
