FROM THE FIELDS: Inconsistent Weather in California

October 01, 2019

Salinas Valley

  • Temperatures cooled significantly over the weekend with some areas experiencing temperatures 15 degrees below normal
  • This follows an extended heat wave of temperatures that rose into the low 100s
  • Iceberg lettuce supplies are as much as 12 to 18 days ahead of schedule in the Salinas Valley due to prolonged heat
  • This cooling trend will help alleviate some heat-related defects, but low volume is expected over the next several weeks

San Joaquin Valley

  • Suppliers are preparing for the short iceberg lettuce harvesting window in Huron, California from mid- to late October
  • High temperatures have pushed growth ahead of schedule
  • Markon inspectors will provide updates in the coming weeks as production draws near

Santa Maria, California

  • Strawberry harvesting is in full swing
  • High temperatures earlier in the season caused some uneven color and size
  • Recent cooler weather will help increase size and develop color as berries ripen
  • The season typically lasts into early December, depending on rainfall
