FROM THE FIELDS: Salinas Valley Quality Update
September 05, 2019
Warm, humid conditions throughout August have caused accelerated maturity and quality issues in all vegetable crops. The unseasonably warm overnight lows, in particular, have weakened cell structure in plants and made them more susceptible to mechanical damage during harvesting, processing, and packing.
Shelf life performance in commodity and value-added items will be challenged over the next 10 days. Items that are most impacted include lettuce, tender leaf items, and strawberries. The below pictures detail some of the current concerns.
