FROM THE FIELDS: Salinas Valley Temperatures
Salinas Valley’s August temperatures are running above seasonal norms. Highs in the upper 70s to low 80s near the coast and near-to-above triple digits inland have been commonplace. Overnight temperatures are not cooling down sufficiently, which is keeping ground temperatures warm. High pressure will be building in the region again this weekend, causing temperatures to increase after a brief cooling off on Friday, August 23.
Lettuce, strawberries, and other Salinas Valley row crop items will experience heat-related quality concerns over the next 7 to 10 days.
Ordering for quick turns is recommended and cold-chain management will be critical for maximizing shelf-life.
