Light showers began falling around 3:00 AM (PST) this morning, with a half inch of rain already recorded in Salinas city limits as of 5:00 AM (PST). The current forecast is for an inch of rainfall to the Salinas/Watsonville, California growing region by this afternoon. The Huron and Santa Maria, California growing regions are expected to receive upwards of half an inch.

Grower/shippers in all of the above-mentioned areas packed lettuce, strawberries, and other row crop items on Saturday and Sunday, October 31 and November 1, in anticipation of the rain. Harvesting crews will be making efforts to keep boxes clean and dry through today’s and tomorrow’s shipments, but elevated levels of dirt/mud may still occur, as well as harvesting and loading delays.

The coldest temperatures of the fall season for the Salinas/Watsonville, Huron, and Santa Maria growing regions will occur over the next few days as colder, Artic air is forecast to follow this low pressure system through California.
