UPDATE: Idaho Potatoes
July 31, 2019
Idaho’s Burbank storage crop season is winding down. Limited supplies of Markon First Crop (MFC) Idaho Burbank Potatoes will be available through August 16. New crop, field-run packer label Norkotahs will be on the market August 5.
Storage Crop
- Several Idaho packing sheds have already closed for the season, creating a gap in supply between storage and new crop supplies
- Markets will remain active through early September
- Order lead-time and flexible loading dates will be needed for coverage
-
Burbank quality is fair
- Pressure bruising is more prevalent at this point in the season
- Hollow heart is sporadic
New Crop Norkotahs
- New crop Norkotah harvesting and packing will begin in a limited manner on August 5
- Field-run MFC Norkotahs will be available August 12
-
Minor skinning and excess moisture may be observed in fresh-run potatoes
- Condensation develops on the potato when it goes from a warm field to a refrigerated truck
- Increased airflow and storage at 50 degrees is recommended to minimize this issue
