FROM THE FIELDS: Warm Weather in Salinas Valley

July 29, 2019
Temperatures in the Salinas Valley climbed into the upper 70s-to low 80s near the coast and as high as 105 degrees in the furthest inland growing areas this past weekend. Temperatures are forecasted to be 5-10 degrees cooler through mid-week, but will rise above seasonal norms again by the end of the week.

Most lettuce items are currently being harvested in the cooler areas closer to the coast and the impact from the heat has not been severe or widespread. However, many tender leaf items such as arugula, spinach, and spring mix are being grown and harvested in the areas that have received the hottest temperatures. Their exposure to 90-100 degree daytime temperatures will have an impact on quality and shelf life.

Forecasts for the second week of August will be dry and warmer than normal.
