UPDATE SUMMARY: WEEK OF JULY 22, 2019

Avocados

  • Mexico’s Flora Loca volume will be 10-15% lower than last year
  • 48-count and larger sizes will be less plentiful than small fruit through mid-August
  • Ripening levels are a challenge as different crops are at different stages of development
  • New crop fruit will take two or more days longer to ripen than other crops

Bell Peppers

  • Green bell prices are climbing as growing regions shift on both coasts
  • As is typical for this time of year, Mexican volume is low
  • Expect elevated green bell markets for the next two weeks
  • Red and yellow bell pepper supplies are sufficient; prices are steady

Cilantro

  • Supplies will tighten due abnormally warm and humid conditions that are causing quality and shelf-life challenges
  • Warmer-than-normal temperatures combined with higher-than-normal humidity across California will turn leaves yellow/brown and encourage seeder development
  • Above-average temperatures and humidity are forecast across California through next week

Idaho Potatoes

Storage Crop

  • Prices will remain active until mid-August

New Crop Norkotahs and Burbanks

  • Field-run Markon First Crop (MFC) Norkotah Potatoes will be available August 13
  • The new crop Burbank harvest will start in late September

White Russets

  • Storage crop White Russet potatoes will be available through August 7

Limes

  • High temperatures and rain in the primary growing region of Veracruz, Mexico are causing quality issues and reducing yields
    • All limes are being sorted for quality prior to shipping
    • High quality fruit will command elevated prices
  • The market will continue to climb over the next several weeks

Lettuce and Leafy Greens

  • Production is increasing in regional growing areas (Colorado, Eastern Canada, and the Northeastern U.S.)
  • Higher yields are forecast in all regions over the next several weeks
  • Value-added products have decreased to non-trigger levels; expect markets to remain at low levels through mid-August

Onions

  • Limited supplies of new crop onions will be available in Washington next week
  • Idaho-grown onions will become available the week of August 5 
  • The Utah season is forecast to start August 19
  • MFC Onions remain available in California and New Mexico
