Patricia has reached category 5 and is the strongest hurricane ever measured in the Western Hemisphere. The hurricane is forecast to make landfall this afternoon on the West Coast of Mexico, bringing winds near 200 mph and heavy rain totaling 8-12 inches (up to 20 inches in higher elevations) to the states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, and Guerrero. Moisture may get pulled into the south-central U.S. this weekend and add to a heavy rain threat forecast for Texas and nearby states 

• Jalisco, Mexico is the main winter growing region of chile peppers, hard squash, and watermelon; neighboring Colima produces almost half of Mexico’s key lime crop
• Damage to young plants may cause shortages and high prices for December and January
• Expect higher prices for commodities loading in South Texas next week including cabbage, carrots, chile peppers, cilantro, citrus, pineapples, and tomatoes
