FROM THE FIELDS: Salinas Valley Heat Spike

June 07, 2019

California’s Salinas Valley is expecting its first summer heat spike on Sunday and Monday, June 9-10. Temperatures in the mid- to upper 80s are expected near the coast and could reach 95-100 degrees further inland. By Tuesday, June 11, coastal temperatures will cool down, but inland temperatures will remain above-normal through at least Thursday, June 13.

Strawberries in particular are sensitive to heat, but Markon is sourcing from the coastal areas that are not expected to be heavily impacted by a two-day heat spike. Lettuce and leafy green crops that are scattered throughout the Salinas Valley are more likely to incur heat-related quality and shelf-life issues.

Markon inspectors will be monitoring all crops closely and will update further as needed.
