UPDATE: Limited Honeydew Supplies

January 21, 2019

Honeydew prices are elevated; supplies are extremely tight, especially small sizes. Expect above-normal prices for up to six more weeks.

  • Central America and Mexico are the primary growing regions
  • Shipments into the U.S. are below-normal due to low yields
    • Abnormally cool temperatures in Mexico slowed maturity and decreased sugar levels
    • White fly challenges in Central America are causing quality issues
  • Small sizes (eight- and nine-count melons) are especially tight; stocks are favoring large sizes (five- and six-count fruit)
  • Expect high prices through February; relief is not expected until new crop Mexican fruit begins shipping in March
