FROM THE FIELDS: Strawberries in Santa Maria, CA

November 23, 2018

The Santa Maria, California strawberry growing region received from .15” to .40” of rain on Wednesday, November 21. No rain was recorded on Thursday, the 22, but another passing shower is expected in the area this evening.

Due to the fact that most harvesting crews were off for Thanksgiving yesterday, there is more potential for berries to have incurred some rain damage from sitting in the wet conditions for a day. Some minor harvesting delays are expected today as crews deal with muddy conditions and culling damaged fruit. Shortened shelf life will be a concern over the next week. Markon inspectors will be monitoring supplies and will update further as needed.
