FROM THE FIELDS: Salinas Valley Weather Update

October 04, 2018

A small storm system is working its way through California’s Salinas Valley, bringing intermittent showers that have persisted throughout the day and may continue into tomorrow. While rain projections are low and non-threatening to harvesting, the bigger concern stems from recent warm, humid nights.

The combination of warm, humid nights followed by patches of rain on iceberg, leaf lettuce, and strawberries can create the following quality defects over the next couple days:

  • Bottom rot
  • Decay
  • Decreased shelf-life in value-added items
  • Increased mildew pressure
  • Pre-mature pinking in commodity and/or value-added lettuce items
  • Soft texture in strawberries
