The Castroville and Salinas artichoke growing regions have experienced persistently warm weather throughout the month of August; similar conditions are forecast through early September. Consistent nighttime temperatures, ranging from 55-65 degrees, have drastically decreased artichoke production; supplies will be 50% lower than normal for the next five to six weeks. 

• Extremely warm night temperatures have interrupted the artichoke plants’ ability to vernalize (or flower), delaying growth and maturity
• Artichokes typically need cool morning and nighttime temperatures in the 40-55 degree range to grow at steady, predictable rates
• Above-average temperatures during both day and night have stressed plants and their environment
• Small sizes dominate supplies; large sizes are very limited
• Overall volume is reduced as much as 50% in all sizes
