FROM THE FIELDS: Lettuce in Huron and Salinas, California

April 11, 2018

The Huron, California lettuce growing season is coming to an end, while more suppliers are ramping up production in the Salinas Valley. By the end of next week, the majority of lettuce supplies will be shipped from the Salinas Valley.

Huron

  • The overall quality of iceberg lettuce from Huron has been good throughout the short season
  • Recent rain followed by warm weather caused rib blight and decay issues in several lots this week
  • Harvesting crews are trimming heads heavily to better detect and avoid defects
  • Current case weights for 24-count liner lettuce range between 40 and 47 pounds

Salinas

  • Iceberg quality is currently very good
  • Some lots are showing minor frost damage that can be removed and sporadic rib blight as well
  • Case weights are much lower, with 24-count liner lettuce ranging from 36 to 44 pounds
  • A chance for light rain returns on Wednesday, April 11, but overall growing conditions are favorable
  • Expect case weights to be consistently higher within the next 10 to 12 days
