FROM THE FIELDS: Rain in the Desert Growing Regions

The Coachella, California growing area has received between .25-.35” of rain with scattered showers expected into the night. Most growers in that area have cancelled harvesting. The heaviest rainfall and storm system has remained in the northern parts of the Los Angeles region.
Light rain (up to .10”) is expected in the Yuma, Arizona growing region later this afternoon along with winds up to 40mph.
Rain-related defects may develop, such as:
- Bottom rot
- Decay
- Decreased yields
- Dense texture
- Internal burn
- Premature pinking in processed items
- Weak tip
