FROM THE FIELDS: Fluctuating Temperatures in the Arizona/California Desert Regions

December 12, 2017

Over the past several days, fluctuating temperatures and strong winds have slowed lettuce maturity in the Arizona/California desert regions. Expect a drop in overall iceberg and romaine case weights; growers may need to pack a higher percentage of Markon Best Available if weight specifications are not met.

Growers in both the Imperial Valley and Yuma are approximately 10 days ahead of the harvesting schedules for all products. A mid-December cold snap may develop which would translate into a demand-exceeds-supply market as less mature lettuces, leafy greens and mix items will not mature fast enough to meet demand for orders.
