Fall Harvesting Transition
Week of October 16
- Limited harvesting of Markon First Crop (MFC) Premium Iceberg will start in Huron
- Transfers from Huron to Salinas will be available
- MFC Premium Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine will continue to be harvested in Salinas
Week of October 23 and 30
- Higher quantities of MFC Premium Iceberg will be harvested in Huron; limited amounts of MFC Premium Iceberg will remain available in Salinas
- Transfers from Huron to Salinas will remain available
- MFC Premium Green Leaf and Romaine will continue to be harvested in Salinas
Week of November 6
- Limited supplies of packer label green leaf, iceberg, and romaine will be available in Yuma
- MFC Premium Green Leaf and Romaine will continue to be harvested in Salinas
- MFC Premium Iceberg will remain available in Huron
- Transfers to Salinas from Yuma and Huron will be available
Week of November 13
- Limited supplies of MFC Premium Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine will be available in Yuma
- MFC Premium Iceberg will remain available in Huron
- MFC Premium Green Leaf and Romaine will continue to be harvested in Salinas
- Transfers to Salinas from Yuma and Huron will be available
Week of November 20
- Processors of Ready-Set-Serve (RSS) Salads, RSS Washed & Trimmed items, and cello-wrapped products are scheduled to begin processing and loading in Yuma

Markon commodity and processed items will be harvested and loaded in the Arizona/California desert growing region as well
- MFC Premium Iceberg harvested in Huron will also be an option (transfer fees apply)
- MFC Premium Green Leaf and Romaine will continue to be harvested in Salinas (transfer fees apply)
Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine
- Prices for green leaf and romaine continue to rise, while the iceberg market has peaked for the next couple of weeks
- Expect limited stocks as growers transition to Yuma, Arizona growing region through November
- MFC Premium Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine are sporadic; Markon Best Available (MBA) will be substituted as necessary
- High temperatures experienced back in September, followed by lower-than-normal temperatures, have caused quality problems and reduced yields
RSS Better Burger Leaf Price Increase
- Effective November 1, 2017 Markon’s supplier of RSS Better Burger Leaf will increase the price of the 2/5-pound pack
- Limited labor and increasing government-mandated wage levels are major contributors to production costs
RSS Broccoli Triggers
- The market is rising due to unfavorable growing conditions over the past several weeks
- Supplies will increase and the market will ease next week due to better growing conditions
RSS Cauliflower Triggers
- The cauliflower market is easing
- Effective today, Thursday, October 5, prices for RSS Cauliflower items will revert back to normal levels
- Stocks are increasing due to favorable weather
Strawberries
- MFC Strawberries are limited; MBA is being substituted as needed
- Markon recommends loading orders in Santa Maria or Los Angeles, California for the week of October 9
- Santa Maria fall berries are exhibiting stronger texture; however, Southern California varieties often possess paler color and odd shape
- Supplies are ample; prices are steady to slightly higher
Tropical Depression Sixteen
- This storm is currently located 80 miles east of Nicaragua and expected to move northeast towards the Florida panhandle by Sunday, October 8
- Expect heavy rain over the next few days in the growing regions of Guatemala and Honduras
- The storm is expected to strengthen this week; potentially reaching hurricane speeds before reaching the Southeastern U.S.
