FOOD SAFETY UPDATE: Outbreak of Cyclospora Infections in Canada

The Public Health Agency of Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada are investigating an outbreak of locally-acquired Cyclospora infections in Canada. At this time the source of the outbreak has not been identified but an investigation to determine the source of the illnesses is under way. Previous outbreaks in Canada and the United States (US) have been linked to imported fresh produce. Markon is closely monitoring the developments of this outbreak investigation.
What we know:
- There have been 20 cases of Cyclospora infections reported in British Columbia (5) and Ontario (15)
- Individuals became sick between May and July 2017
- The majority of the cases (60%) are male
- A specific product has not been identified and the investigation is ongoing
