UPDATE: Salinas Valley Markets

April 24, 2015

Markets remain elevated for major commodities such as asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, green leaf, iceberg, and romaine. Abnormally warm temperatures in late March increased growth; cooler temperatures are slowing plant maturity now and causing a harvesting gap. Light rain is in the forecast for Saturday, April 25 which will result in quality issues and reduce yields.

  • Temperatures are in the low 60s, but will rise to the low to mid-70s by early next week
  • Rain totals of 1/10” are expected on Saturday, April 25, which will increase mildew pressure on leafy green items
  • Most growers are still ahead of harvesting schedules by 10 to 14 days; cool temperatures will cause a slight supply gap
  • Expect very limited supplies of green leaf for the next several weeks; prices are escalating
  • Demand for Mother’s Day will start next week, further tightening stocks
  • Quality problems such as light weights, low yields, and mildew pressure will diminish volume
  • All Salinas Valley markets will increase over the next two to three weeks
